Framed First-Day Issue: Gold Star Mothers Stamps with Mailed Letter (Sept.21, 1948)

This striking framed display features a first-edition sheet of the 1948 Gold Star Mothers 3¢ stamp (Scott #969), released September 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C., to honor mothers of service members who gave their lives for the nation.

Included in the frame is a mailed First-Day of Issue letter, postmarked Washington, D.C.,September 21, 1948, and addressed to John H. Allen of Plain Dealing, Louisiana. Together, the stamps and the letter preserve a moving tribute from the postwar era and offer collectors a rare piece of both philatelic and patriotic history.

Issued in an orange-yellow design, the Gold Star Mothers stamp was the first U.S. stamp in eight years to feature women or women’s organizations, and remains one of the most meaningful military-themed issues in American postal history.

Dear Friends,
On Saturday, September 27 , 2025, the Woody Williams Foundation will proudly host the 3 annual Woody Williams Legacy of Service Celebration in Louisville, KY. This special evening honors the enduring mission of Hershel “Woody” Williams, Medal of Honor recipient, who dedicated his life to serving others—especially Gold Star Families. The event will highlight the growing impact of the Foundation and the legacy Woody left behind.

This year, we celebrate the addition of several new Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments, expanding our reach to over 220 points of service across the country. With more than 20 active Outreach locations, we continue to bring meaningful support directly to the families and communities who need it most. Each monument now serves as a mission hub, allowing us to deliver programs focused on education, outreach, and connection. These locations help us identify the unique needs of Gold Star Families and respond with purpose. We’re also deepening our relationships across the Veteran Serving community, expanding access to resources and ensuring long-term care for the families of the fallen. Your continued support helps make this possible. Whether you were moved by Woody himself or feel called to support military families, we invite you to stand with us. We look forward to seeing you in Louisville for a night of remembrance, purpose, and gratitude.
With appreciation,

Dr. Mark E. Harris USMC (RET.)
