Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams received the Medal of Honor for his gallantry on the battlefield February 23, 1945. For 77 years, Woody has worn this medal not only in service to his country, also for the community. At the age of 98, he has aided in the installation of over 170 active Gold Star Family Memorial Monument projects. Woody’s number one goal is to recognize the families that have lost so much in the time of war. His selfless acts honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. As Woody seeks to continue his service towards his brothers and sisters in arms, he remarks, “This is not my Medal [of Honor]. I am simply the caretaker of it.”

The Woody Williams Foundation’s mission is to honor, recognize, and serve Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The foundation will continue their efforts for generations to come and carry out the vision of Hershel Woody Williams, Chief Warrant Officer 4, United States Marine Corps (Ret.).
